FAQs

A certified diamond is a diamond that has undergone a formal and rigorous evaluation process by an independent gemological laboratory to assess its quality and characteristics.

The purpose of diamond certification is to provide an objective and standardised assessment of a diamond’s key attributes, commonly known as the “Four C's,” which include:

  • Carat Weight: The measurement of a diamond’s size, typically expressed in carats. One carat is equivalent to 200 milligrams.
  • Cut: The quality of the diamond’s cut, which affects its brilliance and sparkle. It considers factors like proportions, symmetry, and polish.
  • Colour: The absence of colour, or presence of subtle tints in a diamond. A grading scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown) is used, with D being the most valuable.
  • Clarity: The presence of internal or external imperfections, known as inclusions and blemishes, which are assessed and graded based on their visibility and impact on the diamond’s appearance.

In addition to the Four C’s, a diamond certificate may also include other information, such as measurements, fluorescence, and the diamond’s unique identification number.

The certification process in typically conducted by reputable gemological laboratories, such as the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) or the European Gemological Laboratory (EGL).

These organizations used standardised grading criteria and advanced gemological techniques to provide an objective and reliable assessment of a diamond’s quality.

  1. Carat Weight/ Size
Carat weight is a significant factor in determining a diamond's price. Larger diamonds generally command higher prices, as they are rarer and more visually impactful.
  2. Cut Quality
The cut of a diamond influences its brilliance and overall visual appeal. Diamonds with excellent cuts are often priced higher due to the craftsmanship required to achieve optimal light reflection.
  3. Colour Grade
The presence or absence of colour in a diamond affects its price. Colourless diamonds (graded D) are valued more highly than those with visible colour. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) grades diamonds on a scale from D (colourless) to Z (light yellow or brown).
  4. Clarity Grade
Clarity refers to the presence of internal or external flaws, known as inclusions and blemishes, respectively. Diamonds with fewer or no visible flaws are considered more valuable. The GIA grades clarity on a scale from Flawless (no inclusions or blemishes visible under 10x magnification) to Included (inclusions and/or blemishes visible to the naked eye).
  5. Rapaport Diamond Price List
The Rapaport Price List is an industry-standard pricing guide used by diamond dealers and retailers. It provides benchmark prices for different diamond categories based on the Four Cs. The list is regularly updated to reflect market conditions.

Keep in mind that the combination of these factors, along with market dynamics, ultimately determines the overall value and pricing of a diamond.
